What Are You Going to do, Kill Me?

Title: Hidden in Plain Sight also known as Kill Me Twice

Director: Stacia Crawford

Lead Actor: Victoria Barabas (Anna) Jack Fisher (Danny)

Released: 2018

Genre: Thriller

Do you ever wish that if you could go back in time to do something different in your life? Maybe it was a bad decision or maybe you wanted to go back in time to when you were most happy. In this movie that wasn’t an option for Anna, the main character. This movie is full of crazy plot twists that you will never see coming. When I was looking for a movie to watch, it caught my eye because I never saw a serious movie where someone fakes their own death, or so I thought.

In this movie, a young woman, Anna, was in love with a man. They met at the art gallery and it was love at first sight. Little did she know that he was a dangerous man. In the beginning of their relationship, he treated her like a queen. By buying her expensive earrings, or by taking her out to a fancy restaurant. One night she was abruptly woken up by a man with a ski mask asking her where the money is hidden. He then began to choke her, as her boyfriend was in the next room, he grabbed a hair dyer and immediately started choking the robber. After the deed was done, Anna immediately wanted to call the police and say it was self-defense. Her boyfriend, Nick (Gino Anthony Pesi) began to yell at her saying that she cannot call the police or tell anyone about this situation. She then went home and began ignoring Nick. When she started doing this, Nick began to become enraged causing him to follow and stalk her. One threat that he said to her was “I’ll always be able to find you and if you leave me I will find your mom and hurt her. ” This is when she knew that she had to leave him. But how could she went she just found out that she was carrying his child? Her friend suggest that she knew a guy that can get get her a fake ID causing her to start fresh. But little did she know that it didn’t last as long as she hoped for.

While watching this movie, I wasn’t confused at all. The director did a really nice effect for flashbacks in order for the audience to not get confused. The movie was very suspenseful in some parts. I do love the story line, it is what got me so interested. If you are a type of person that loves knowing the story line before anything happens, this is a movie for you. This movie is predictable, and does not have any plot twists. If you like suspenseful but not a scary movie, I would suggest this movie for you. Unfortunately, I am not one of those people. I love being on the edge of my set constantly, and for this movie, it was only once or twice.

This movie is very dramatic and too cheesy for my liking. The movie doesn’t give background information on Nick. For example, they never go into detail on why he is the way he is. I personally think that I had no idea who the characters really were, there was no connection that I had with the characters. The director should’ve went into detail about Anna and Nick’s lives. Such as a backstory. This movie is very unrealistic, and I am very disappointed. There was no effort into making this a good movie, I felt as if it was rushed. As I researched, there are a lot of people that also feel this way about this movie. I personally think that the actors were awful, and that they didn’t know what they were doing. This movie is embarrassing. It is a shame that a movie that had so much potential, was given the opportunity to succeed.

I believe that this movie has potential, but it was a predictable story line. The main character, Anna, in my opinion wasn’t that good of an actor. It’s almost as if she was giving up the movie. I felt as if she was giving the audience hints about what was going to happen in the movie. Overall I don’t think the director went into depth with the story line, it all felt very rushed in some places. This movie had a lot of potential, but it wasn’t used, which is very devastating.

No Matter How Much We Fight, We will Never be Apart

Title: Tom and Jerry

Director: Joseph Barbera, William Hannah, and Chuck Jones

Lead Actors: Joseph Barbera (Tom) and William Hanna (Jerry)

Released:1932

Genre: Animation, television show

Ever wondered what it would be like to be chased by someone your whole life? Constantly being on the run? Tom and Jerry has been known for hilarious skits. This show is muted with minimal talking, but has a lot of sound effects and music. The cat and mouse duo is ironic. Tom tries to get the mouse all throughout the episodes, but he can never catch him. Tom is faced with a lot of challenging methods in order to capture the mouse. Jerry on the other hand, is quite hard to catch with his quick wits. Will Tom the cat eventually catch Jerry? Or will something else come out of this weird friendly relationship?

Since this is a television show, its hard to discuss all of the episodes and seasons in one blog. Most of the episodes starts with Jerry provoking Tom, making Tom hatch a plan on how to get Jerry back. Tom is rarely successful when he does catch Jerry because he likes to take his time, when trying to eat him. Although, that doesn’t stop Jerry from getting away from Tom. Throughout these episodes, you can see a close bond coming between them. No matter how many times they try to hurt each other, or even Tom trying to eat Jerry, their connection always grows in these episodes. For example if one is sad, the other will try to cheer the other one up. These episodes only come in a great awhile. Most of the episodes deals with them trying to sabotage one another. For example, when their owner shows up in the episode, Jerry will try everything in his power to get Tom in trouble since the owner doesn’t know Jerry exists. This show is hilarious and worth the watch!

When I was little, I loved this show. I love it even more now. But with this age and generation a lot of people are sacred of what Tom and Jerry can have on little kids’ minds today. I personally believe that this show has a lot of life lessons hidden. For example, there’s always going to be curve balls throwing your way. No matter is your big or small, your going to have to find a way to get around it. I believe that this show, shouldn’t be taken seriously. When I was a kid watching this show, I knew that it was so unrealistic that I should’t even try to attempt it on my sister. I knew that I would get in big trouble if I would’ve tried anything that they did. Overall, this show always made me think about my sister and I’s relationship. No matter how much we fight, we will always be there for each other. I feel like a lot of people can relate to this. No matter who is by your side, you will always have some type of arguments. But that is just how the relationship begins stronger.

On the other hand of this show, it can be extremely graphic. For example, Jerry the mouse, would use axes to decapitate Tom. A decade ago, people today wouldn’t have an issue with their children watching this, but sadly times have changed. In today’s society their has been a lot of violence, some evidence may include school shootings. A lot of kids now are currently not under control and it could be because of the things they watch and the things they play. Also, a lot of people hate the fact that in some episodes it is known that the show has some racism in it. Some people state that they barely recognized it or even thought that way. As I have been doing some research, I found that there is a conspiracy theory on Tom and Jerry. The theory says that the very last episode of Tom and Jerry is that they committed suicide. Tom was sitting on train tracks and a voice comes on saying, “in a few minutes it will be over, ans foe the first time you’ll be happy.” Then you can hear a train in the background. This is deeper and darker then we could ever imagine. I can see why parents do not think its a good idea to be watching this series, but all I can say, is that its a legacy.

My overall thought about this, is mixed. I do believe that as I was growing up on this show, I have never thought about doing anything violent. On the other hand, I can get why parent’s wouldn’t want their children to see this violent show undercover. I personally, think I would let my children watch this just based on the fact that I watched it growing up too. I guess it just depends on your preference.

That Could’ve been Way Worse

Title: The Heat

Lead Actor(s): Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy

Released: June 28, 2013

Genre: Comedy

In school, are you ever paired with an annoying individual? In this movie, successful detective, Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) is a determined, uptight, New York FBI agent that’s has come down by choice thinking that she was going to work on her own. Little to her knowledge, she was going to work with a bad mouthed, rule breaking, and quick tempered, Boston detective Sharron Mullins (Melissa McCarthy).

Sarah Ashburn, is an intelligent agent who is highly successful and is always breaking the hardest cases. With her abilities, she was asked to help out another investigation, but got punished when working with a rule breaking detective, Sharron Mullins. In the beginning of the movie, the two detectives were always getting in disagreements based on the fact that they have completely different ideas on how to approach situations. After a night out of trying to get a drug lords cell phone battery, they actually connected and was successful with getting the battery. This is when they finally realized that they had to acquire each others help in order for the plan to be successful, they finally set each others differences aside for the sake of the job. Even though the job was successful, Agent Sarah got in trouble based upon the fact that she “crossed the line”. As being Sarah’s acquaintance, Agent Mullins, wanted to make her feel better and have a good time. They went to the local bar and ended up getting blacked out wasted. They didn’t realize that someone hid a secret bomb in the car, will they realize it before its too late?

This movie is whimsical and very entertaining. This may be my own personal opinion but these actors fit their roles perfectly. I feel as if Sandra Bullock (Sarah Ashburn) is a control freak when dealing with certain tasks. As with Melissa McCarthy (Sharron Mullins), I feel as if she is a sarcastic, goofball, that is hilarious, and always making people laugh. This movie should not be taken seriously, there are a lot of inappropriate jokes and scenes, but in the preview it did say that the movie was going to consist of bad language. I loved how the plot of the movie was about two unordinary cops. What I mean when I say this is that in most movies when you are told that it is a cop movie your mind most likely goes towards the main characters being males. Well not this movie, it has quality girls that are so unordinary. Unlike other women cop movies that would have big boobs, skinny waist, blonde, perky lips, etc. There is also a plot twist mixed up in this crazy and hilarious movie.

Some people voiced their opinion and said that there were a lot of inconveniences in the movie, where it made it run slower and more boring. There was a lot of inappropriate jokes, which would make some people uncomfortable while others thought it was funny. I started to personally do some research on this movie because I thought my fans deserve some other people’s perspectives as well. I personally didn’t think this, but as I was doing research on the movie, I came across a lot of people saying how sloppy they thought the movie was. As I came across this, it got me thinking. There were some parts of the movie that did look a bit out of place, or sloppy. Also, Melissa McCarthy was very disrespectful and demonizing to others. In the movie, there were a lot of drinking and shootings. The shootings had some graphic visuals which I could see why people could be disturbed. People also stated that since the two main characters were the exact opposite, it made the movie look bad by having no chemistry. I do not believe that that is true at all considering it was suppose to be like that, but people have other opinions then me.

I absolutely loved this movie. I thought it was hysterical. Even though there was a lot of profanity, if you look past that the jokes are funny, but you cannot be overly sensitive about it. If your an open-minded person, I would strongly suggest this movie. If you are sensitive, this wouldn’t be the movie for you. Overall, I personally thought it was hilarious, there were some moments that I couldn’t stop laughing, but there were other moments where it ran a little slow. This is one movie that I would strongly recommend.

It is Far more Better to be Alone, Then to have Bad Company

Title: Hush

Director: Mike Flanagan

Lead Actor: Kate Siegel

Released: March 12, 2016

Genre: Thriller/Horror

As young adults, we often are left home alone a lot. Sometimes, this weird idea pops in the back of your mind saying “what if your not alone?” Or am I the only one at home? In this movie, an outlying deaf woman lives in a house by herself in an isolated area, finding herself and trying to fight for her life after she sees a hidden male figure in the window.

Maddie Young (Kate Siegel) is the main character who lost her abilities to hear and speak due to an infection that happened when she was ten. She felt abnormal to society and later on moved to an isolated house so she could be able to work quietly on her novels. Her close friend Sarah Greene (Samantha Sloyan), came over to chit chat, but she eventually left to go get dinner. Time flew by and it was nighttime. Sarah abruptly started banging on the glass door, and was frantic; she had an arrow in her back. Of course, Maddie couldn’t hear or see her and a man in a mask came up behind Sarah and stabbed her in the back causing her to die. This is when the man realized that Maddie couldn’t hear based upon the fact that her friend was frantically screaming and she didn’t even flinch. Throughout the movie he tries to kill her, but does she escape?

As I began to watch this movie, I figured out why everyone loved it. It is not very often that the main character in a horror film would have disabilities that couldn’t allow her to hear or speak. It reminds me of nightmares that I would have where I cannot yell for help or move, and I cannot imagine actually living through that. In the beginning of the movie I was nervous, since I never watched a horror movie with the main character having disabilities. This kept me watching because I HAD to know what was going to happen.

A big problem about this movie that a lot of adults were having was how gruesome this movie was. They were upset knowing that their children watched it. In my opinion, I personally thought it was a cliche. With how the movie was going, it seemed like it was a regular scary movie plot where the killer is trying to murder the main character and we have to watch and see if the killer is successful or not. One problem I had with this, is that they showed who the killer was, rather than us waiting for him to be revealed. Since they did this I think it took some of the excitement and mystery away from the movie. I felt that there could have been more plot twists, but instead it was straight to the point. I also feel like the main character and the killer could have had a better backstory to them. The question I feel myself asking a lot is why her? When the killer realized that she was deaf he could’ve just went away, unseen. Why did he take his time and energy to taunt her, when he didn’t even know her? I feel as if the directors could’ve gave us more details. I thought that it was going to be a fantastic movie but it feel short. Killer shows himself early,, not really a horror movie but more like a thriller. There were no plot twists.

I personally would not recommend this movie because I thought it was very bland and predictable. Even though the main character stood out to me, she was very predictable in the moves that she made. If you are looking for a thriller or a good horror movie I would recommend Kristy or The Conjuring. These movies were really intense and somewhat scary. This movie reminded me of a silent movie, which some people might like. Even though, there’s positives about this movie, and I love how its diverse, I would not recommend it because I think it could’ve went above my expectations. This movie had a lot of potential, but I feel like the directors got bored.

Good-bye Doesn’t Have to be Forever

Title: To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before

Director: Susan Johnson

Lead Actors: Lana Condor and Noah Centineo

Released: August 17,2018

Genre: Teen Romance

Growing up, we all have experienced writing down all our crushes when we were younger or even writing down who we hate or what we fear. We would never expect those people receiving those letters because we would feel embarrassed; but that’s not the case in this movie.

The main character, Lara Jean (Lana Condor) was a lonely high schooler that always hung out with her younger sister, Kitty. She woke up and got ready for school thinking that it was a normal day, until a total of five guys came up to her talking about how they are honored that she liked them, but they didn’t feel the same way. She was so confused and after school, she ran home. She looked everywhere for the box with the love letters but they were nowhere to be found. She cried because of how embarrassed she was. She had no idea how the letters got out. That was until her younger sister admitted that she did it. One of the letters went to Peter Kavinsky (Noah Centineo) who is one of the most popular guys in school. They make an alliance to make people think that they were dating in order to make Peter Kavinsky’s ex girlfriend jealous. Little did they realize what they actually signed up for.

I decided to choose this movie to review because I knew it was a good one. It relates to teenage life and it’s not to the point that it’s make believe. As a teenager, I felt the stress and anxiety that Lara Jean felt, while in high school. Since she didn’t have any friends besides her sister, she found that she was quiet lonely, which a lot of teenagers could relate to. This movie felt real, and made me very interested to know the ending and how it went. All in all, it is very different from the clique 80’s romance movies. In the middle of the movie I was shocked with what happened, which kept me on the edge of my seat. One of the reasons it was different was because they actually had a Asian American actress as the lead role, which is very hard to find in movies, especially such a popular one. Adding on to my thought, I also observed that it was updated to modern times so millennial’s would relate to it more. This would include: Iphones, mean girls, and big parties at nice, updated households that include underground pools. It provides a lot of plot twists that you will never see coming unlike the other 80’s romance movies.

Some things I found very unpleasing about this movie was that they made the male main character look like a hero when instead he was an unfaithful man. In the movie he had snuck around with someone he shouldn’t have, which caused some suspicion. He never got called out for the thing that he had done, instead he was rewarded. There was clearly a love triangle and as a teenage girl that makes me furious with rage. Knowing that someone could do you so dirty disgusts me. Secondly, I didn’t like how short the movie was because it didn’t give us a clear ending of how the two of them ended. I wish there was more of an ending to the movie rather then it just leading off with us not curious about anything, the creators just dropped the movie at the end. At the end of the movie, Lara Jean wasn’t know as the unknown girl anymore since she “dated one of the most popular guy in the school, but she mentally didn’t mature throughout the movie, which is what I really like to see in these romance type of movies.

My overall thought about this movie is, yes absolutely watch it. Even though it seems like there is a lot of negative statements about the movie, the positives definitely outweigh them! As a teenager I related to Lara Jean so much it was ridiculous! This movie is the best teen romance movie I have ever seen so far!
